We are proud to announce that for the SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR, the Parkland ALS Team has taken FIRST PLACE in the Durham Paramedic Association Annuals Skills Competition on March 31, 2007 in Whitby, Ontario.
Who are we?
We are an Advanced Life Support Competition team made up of several Paramedics from
Parkland Ambulance Authority.
Why compete?
The motto of the Durham Paramedic Associations Annual Skills Competition is "Excellence
through Challenge". We believe that by working to get ourselves ready to compete against
the highest caliber teams in the country, we enhance our skills, broaden our knowledge
and thus provide better care to our patients. The competitions also provide plenty
of time for information sharing, whether it be knowledge based (protocols, medications,
treatments etc) or operational based (vehicle design, staffing, equipment etc). At
every competition the local media is also invited to the event, raising awareness
of Emergency Medical Services in the community. We have also been fortunate enough
to have had our local newspaper (The
Stony Plain Reporter) interview us after each competition, where we were able
to let our home community know about our successes.
Where have you competed?
We have competed at the Chain of Survival conference in Calgary in 2001 & 2003,
as well as the Annual Skills Competition in Whitby, Ontario in 2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007.
Competing is not cheap, and we fund raise year-round to earn money to allow us to
travel to competitions. Even with that fund raising, team members not only pay for
their own snacks, beverages, meals and other expenses but take time off as vacation
in order to attend competitions.
